Avanci EV Charger

Licensing cellular connected smart electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

Avanci EV Charger brings together licensors and licensees to create a one-stop licensing program for connected chargers using 4G, 3G and 2G cellular communications.

Smart EV chargers play a crucial role in making electric vehicle charging more efficient, convenient, and sustainable while supporting the integration of EVs into the larger energy ecosystem.

To do this, smart EV chargers require connection to the internet through technologies including cellular, which have been developed through open standardization with contributions from thousands of inventors at dozens of companies and research institutions.

Avanci EV Charger offers manufacturers of smart EV chargers, and charge point operators who brand their own chargers, an efficient option of a single license for their connected chargers, covering the essential cellular technologies of the licensors currently participating in the program, plus those who join in future.

Pricing – Always fair.

Avanci shares a commitment with the IoT ecosystem to make licenses for the latest standard wireless technologies available in a way that is fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND). This well-established industry principle ensures that those using standardized technologies in their products have access on fair terms, and those creating wireless technology receive a fair return on their investment.

Easy, uncomplicated possibilities

Avanci is committed to streamlining the technology-sharing process. Our transparent, fixed price royalty model accommodates the wide range of uses in connected EV chargers.

Fair, fixed prices for smart EV chargers

The royalty rate in an Avanci license for EV chargers will never increase during the term of the license, regardless of:

  • The number of 2G, 3G and 4G essential patents added to the license
  • How many new licensors join the Avanci EV Charger program

Market-driven pricing

License rates, paid once for the charger’s lifetime
Category 1 (< 25kW output power, without infotainment functions and without a user interface to receive and present information received over a cellular network to the EV Charger user) $5/charger
Category 2 (< 150kW output power, without infotainment functions and not a Category 1 charger) $9/charger
Category 3 (150kW or more output power, without infotainment functions) $11/charger
Category 4 (Any EV charger capable of performing infotainment functions, such as playing downloaded video, audio and/or other entertainment content, and/or access internet-enabled content such as commercials or advertisements, and/or provide network connectivity for a wireless LAN) $13/charger

Early licensee reductions – for Avanci EV Charger licenses signed before the later of December 5, 2024 or within six months of first sale or commercial use of a cellular smart EV charger – rates are reduced by $1 per charger in all categories

The above pricing may change in the future.

FAQs – We’re doing things in a new way

Our focus on making things easy means we’re always here to answer your questions.

Devices which are capable of charging electric vehicles and which also have a cellular (4G, 3G or 2G) connection.

The program covers the 4G, 3G and 2G essential patents of participating licensors, when used in a smart EV charger.

Infotainment functions include the ability to play downloaded video and audio content and/or other entertainment, and/or access internet-enabled content such as commercials or advertisements, and/or provide network connectivity for a wireless local area network such as a Wi-Fi Hotspot. They cover more than information, video instructions or directions on how to use the charger or other pre-installed content.

Category 1 covers any EV charger that (i) does not include a user interface to receive and present any information received over a cellular network to a user of the EV Charger, (ii) is not capable of performing any Infotainment Functions, and (iii) has a power output capacity of less than 25kW

Category 2 covers any charger that (i) is not capable of performing any Infotainment Functions, (ii) has a power output capacity of less than 150 kW, and (iii) is not a Category 1 EV Charger.

Category 3 covers any charger (i) that is not capable of performing any Infotainment Functions and (ii) has a power output capacity of at least 150 kW.

Category 4 covers any charger that is capable of performing infotainment functions.

Not today, but we are exploring the potential for a 5G program. Contact us if this is of interest to you either as a licensor or an EV charger manufacturer or charge point operator.
